Why
the name “The Dharma Kitchen?”
I have always had an interest in various religious/spiritual
ideals and concepts. Many moons ago in my
research, I came across the notion of dharma. I was captured instantly, I understood the
meaning on multiple levels, and it has remained one of the guiding principals
of my life ever since. Possessing
multiple meanings in several Indian religions, dharma is difficult to translate into a single word in
English. It would, therefore, be logical
to explain the term in the simplest fashion.
Think of dharma as ideal
balance. It signifies behaviors of living in harmony and accord with the
universe by practicing ideas of purification, transformation, and
righteousness. Those who know me know
that I like to know the linguistic history of word, so here it goes. The root syllable dhr comes from classical Sanskrit and means to ‘hold, maintain, and
keep’ in balance.
The Dharma Kitchen is my way of coming into balance with the
most pressing issue, out-of-balance issue in my life—my health. Although I sought after and worked to find
balance in many aspects of my life, my weight and eating habits were always in
flux tilting more and more toward an unstable and imbalanced (adharma) lifestyle that was literally
killing me slowly. Over the past three
years, my efforts to find balance have lead me here. It has become time to put into practice some
of the principles I learned while sitting under the moon.
